Teachers are Heroes Award

Sandra Turner, a beloved teacher at Diamond Valley Middle School, was surprised during her prep period when students, administrators, representatives from Mix 101.3 “The Mix” and Azusa Pacific University, and her husband walked through her door. She stood at the front of her classroom stunned and unsure of what was happening. Suddenly the representative from Azusa let her know she had been chosen as the March recipient for the Teachers are Heroes Award.

This is the third year Azusa Pacific has joined Mix 101.3 radio station to recognize teachers that make an impact on students’ lives. A radio broadcaster on Mix 101.3 asks listeners to visit their website and nominate their favorite teacher. Entries are collected and a panel of Azusa Pacific representatives select a teacher to recognize for the month. At the end of each school year, the teachers that won are invited to a Lake Elsinore Storm game and they also receive various other prizes.

Mrs. Turner, a history teacher, was speechless and in shock of receiving the award. She said, “This award beats any other award received because it was from a student.” Jacen Moore, one of her students, submitted Mrs. Turner’s name to be considered for the award. He nominated her because he believes she is a hero. He said, “I think she is our hero because she does community service to help others, and loves to teach her students in a positive way that make her students feel important. She also comes from a four-generation military family.”

Mrs. Turner's students was able to witness their teacher receive the award. She was given a certificate, tickets for her and everyone in her class to go to a Lake Elsinore Storm game in May, apparel, and a pizza party.

Mrs. Turner’s husband, David Turner, could not be more proud of her. He said, “It’s moments like this that make me proud; she continues to surprise me.” Diamond Valley Principal Robert Dominguez said he feels fortunate to have her as a teacher on his campus. He said she is an amazing and supportive educator and is constantly working to improve the culture at Diamond Valley.

Congratulations Sandra Turner on your Teachers are Heroes Award!
