Today I am pleased to share another safety update. This series will continue throughout the year as we actively review and innovate in the area of safety. Last month I highlighted our School Resource Officers, the recent addition of SRO staff, and the vital role that the Hemet Police department and Riverside Sheriff play in securing our school sites. This month I would like to share information about two of our ongoing safety initiatives including Salto Security and our district's Lock-Door Policy protocol. SALTO Systems is a cloud-based lock and key system that we plan to install across the district over the course of this year and into the 2023-2024 school year. For students, Salto acts as a barrier to ensure that only permitted staff and individuals are able to access facilities. Salto is a one-way, automatic locking system that requires a coded key fob to enter into a school building or classroom. The locking system is distinctly one way; it safeguards against "unwanted entry", but it does not block students or staff from exiting as needed. As is standard at our school sites, the front office door is unlocked during school hours; however, if a safety concern ever arises outside of the school building or nearby, all exterior school doors can be locked by authorized personnel with the click of a button. These lockdown features work in tandem with an existing software Telecenter U, an alert system using staff workplace phones. This allows us to secure our school sites from outside potential dangers at a moment's notice. For staff Salto is a locking system that requires individual key fobs to get into certain areas on school sites. The key fobs are individually coded to ensure proper administrative access levels to areas such as offices, classrooms, and meeting areas. These coded key fobs also provide greater security for lost keys. Where the loss of a brass key results in updating locks, Salto key fobs can be immediately disabled when lost. A key part of taking advantage of Salto Security is following Hemet Unified's existing Locked Classroom Door Policy. This policy is fairly self-explanatory when students and staff are in class the doors are closed and locked. In contrast to residential doors, school site doors have special reinforcements that meet industry safety standards to protect against unwanted entry, and with the addition of Salto, only permitted individuals can access classrooms with a proper key fob. In closing, we all have a responsibility to make sure our schools are safe places for all students.
