Exploring the Future of Food: West Valley High School's IB Program Participates in the 2023 Global Student Conference in Boston

This past July 31 - August 5, 2023, I2 students enrolled in the Class of 2024’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program at West Valley High School embarked on an educational field trip to Boston, Massachusetts, as part of the IB Global Student Conference. This annual conference brings together students from around the world to explore critical global issues, engage in community service, and learn from inspiring speakers.

This year’s theme, “The Future of Food,” was chosen to shed light on the complex issues surrounding global food production and consumption. The conference schedule was packed with engaging activities and opportunities for student learning and connection. Students had the chance to hear from expert speakers, tour Harvard University, engage in team-building activities, and even participate in a rope course. Archery, swimming, and movie nights added a touch of fun to the conference.

Throughout the conference, students were encouraged to make connections with their peers from different parts of the world. The cultural exchange and international camaraderie were evident as friendships were created. Students came together to celebrate the power of food in fostering togetherness exemplified by sharing s’mores with friends from Ecuador, Japan, China, and beyond.

A significant aspect of the program was community service. Incorporating a full day dedicated to community service represented a shift from the past conference structures. Students volunteered their time for charity food preparation which allowed them to engage with the local community and learn about the importance of giving back. By interacting with local communities, they were able to gain a deeper understanding of local issues. Paired with the academic focus of the conference, students explored Theory of Knowledge concepts while diving into the topic of the future of food, and transitioning from academic inquiry to practical application, paving the way for enriched classroom experiences throughout this school year. All in all, it was a very educational and memorable experience for all who participated.
