Hemet Unified School District is proud to announce the new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Darel Hansen. Mr. Hansen comes from Riverside Unified School District where he served as the district’s Director of Certificated Personnel.
Mr. Hansen has a long and proud career working in education, the majority of which was working within the Riverside area. Growing up, Mr. Hansen’s plans did not include working in the education field. His dream was to play baseball at a professional level, which he did. He was drafted by the Oakland A’s and spent five years pitching for them. When his baseball career came to a close, he thought about coaching baseball at the high school level. “I walked into the school system taking any position, so that I could work on a campus and coach,” said Hansen. He began his career as a classified employee as a substitute grounds custodian and worked his way up. He went back to school and received his teaching credentials from National University and began teaching at La Sierra High School. Throughout his multitude of positions, he learned that his passion was to create an environment where students could succeed.
When the opportunity presented itself for Mr. Hansen to work at Hemet Unified he decided to tour the city. He said he spent a day driving throughout the town, looking at the various schools and businesses. “The strong sense of community really intrigued me,” said Hansen. Since applying for the position, a number of people who have a connection to Hemet approached him. The comments and stories he heard reaffirmed his desire to work for the district.
Hansen said he is exciting to begin his journey at Hemet Unified. He is a strong believer in the value of collaboration and staff members working together towards the common goal of student achievement. He said his various positions as a classified and certificated employee will help him in his new position, because he is able to understand the complexities of various positions.
