Ramona Cares

What began as a conversation about improving attendance quickly grew into a powerful evening of connection, compassion, and community at Ramona Elementary School.

During routine attendance discussions, staff reflected on how housing instability and frequent transitions can make it difficult for some families—particularly those experiencing homelessness or foster placement changes—to stay consistently connected to school. With the holidays approaching, the school saw an opportunity to remove barriers, strengthen relationships, and remind families that they are seen, supported, and valued.

The idea was simple: invite families to share a meal, provide shelf-stable food, and offer access to gently used clothing. But through the generosity of staff and community partners, the event transformed into something far more impactful.

Thanks to overwhelming community support, students received thoughtfully prepared gift bags filled with new clothing, shoes, hygiene items, books, and toys. Families were also sent home with grocery bags and shared a warm meal together, creating a welcoming and joyful atmosphere.

Throughout the evening, students and families participated in cookie decorating, crafts, games, and hot cocoa stations—spaces designed not just for fun, but for meaningful connection. Staff members and volunteers spent time talking with families, getting to know them beyond the classroom, and offering support in a relaxed, caring environment.

Of the 25 families invited, 23 attended, representing nearly 90 students and parents. The turnout reflected both the need for and the value of intentional outreach efforts like this one.

Family feedback captured the heart of the evening:

·         “This was a spark of light during a difficult holiday.”

·         “Thank you for making Christmas special for our kids.”

·         “We truly felt the care from everyone involved.”

Ramona Cares was a reminder that when schools and communities come together with a shared purpose, the impact reaches far beyond one evening. It strengthens trust, builds relationships, and reinforces the message that every family matters—especially during times when support is needed most.

A special thanks to the community partners whose generosity and time helped make this event so meaningful for our families: LBA Logistics, Bible Fellowship, Victor Services, Good News Club, and WinCo Foods. Their partnership, generosity, and shared commitment to supporting students and families made a lasting impact and truly embodied the spirit of community care.
